There are 2489 districts, 308 counties and 16 provinces, whose governors are appointed by the prime minister. Major cities are Warsaw, Lodz, Cracow, Wroclaw, Poznan, Gdansk, Szczecin, Bydgoszcz, Katowice and Lublin. Main geographical regions are Pomerania (Pomorze), Masuria (Mazury), Wielkopolska, Mazovia (Mazowsze), Podlasie, Silesia (Slask), Malopolska and Podkarpacie.
Along all Poland's borders, 13 Euroregions have been created since 1990; these are areas of cross-border co-operation based on agreements signed by local authorities from the neighbouring countries.
The aims of the Euroregions are: strengthening neighbour contacts, developing infrastructure, economic co-operation, environment protection, tourism as well as cultural and educational activities. The Euroregions include the Pomerania (Poland, Germany, Sweden), Nysa (Poland, Czech Republic, Germany) and Carpathian regions (Poland, Ukraine, Hungary, Slovakia, Romania). |
